Where else can you combine spectacular scenery, jaw-dropping canyons, swooping bald eagles, the
world’s most majestic mountains, and a dollop of rich caviar on top of your scrambled eggs? Canada’s Rocky
Mountaineer is the only candidate.
A trip from Vancouver to the Rocky Mountains is not just some sort of indulgence with truly
excellent on-board service. It is a journey back into Canada’s past. In fact, a journey on the Rocky Mountaineer is
to step back to a time before Canada was Canada. In 1871, Vancouver joined the Canadian Federation ... on the
condition that the rail line was built to span the country from East to West and that this feat be accomplished
within ten years. They gave to Canada’s great rail genius William Cornelius Van Horne and he did it in five!
When you take in Canada by rail, you invoke that grand pioneering spirit, harkening back to a time
when a country depended on the rail. When the greatest minds of the time planned how to use 20 million acres and
how they could cut through that imposing Mountain range that today will take your breath away – over an impeccable
presented cut of Alberta Triple A Sirloin and a glass of fine Okanagan wine.
The Rocky Mountaineer offers two classes, Redleaf and Goldleaf; but for those who wish their
experience of Canada to be unforgettable, there is really only one: Goldleaf offers the world famous domed carriage
- which is a must for two reasons. First, it accommodates the need for a view that frames, rather than obstructs,
the magnificent mountainscape that is the mighty and majestic Rocky Mountains. A simple Redleaf picture window
whilst you crane over your neighbour to look out, just won’t cut it.
The other reason is that the Rocky Mountains is teeming with Bears, Moose, Osprey, Elk, Wolves,
Lynx, Eagles, Deer, and many more animals that we rarely see in Australasia. The extra window frontage – besides
being at the exact height to view Osprey and Eagle nests – provides your best chance of spotting the animals that,
when announced by your stewards, send an excited rush through the cabin.
The Rocky Mountaineer operates trains over four principal routes:
Over the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) on the First Passage to the West route from Vancouver,
British Columbia via Kamloops to Banff, Alberta.
Over the Canadian National Railway (CN) on the Journey through the Clouds route from Vancouver via
Kamloops to Jasper, Alberta
The Rainforest to Goldrush route over the CN operated portion from North Vancouver via Whistler and
Quesnel through Prince George to Jasper
The Whistler Sea to Sky Climb return day trip from North Vancouver to Whistler.
Take the Rocky Mountaineer. It’s unforgettable. It’s unique. It’s spectacular. And remember this
tip, don’t ask them what time they arrive at the station! (I’ll explain later...)
