New York Travel Tours & Holiday Packages
Where do you start in a city that has everything? Ironically, not with a map! You see, the unique grid-like
geography of the City that Never Sleeps means that whilst wherever you choose to head first might look close on your map, I
GUARANTEE you it isn’t. So, you’re a little mad if you don’t start your first day with the hop on, hop off
bus.
Yes I know the arguments from all the tighties shouting “you can use the subway”, and yes it is much safer now
than years past, but the subway is still going to stop at points that New Yorkers require, not at points that their
visitors want to make a bee-line to. So, if your ‘travel guru friend’ keeps telling you to ‘save money’ on the
subway, tell them to shove an apple in it, and pay for day one on the hop on/hop off. You’ll be there in a New York
minute! And with a hell of a lot less fussing around whilst you realise the enormous breadth of this
metropolis.
When New York has so many highlights which ones do you tackle? And in what order? Well most travellers want to
see the Empire State Building, Times Square, the ethereal Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central
Station, Central Park, Broadway, Madison Square Garden and Ground Zero (to name just some of the selection).
Cluster your sightseeing into different regions. New
York is organised into ‘buroughs’ for exactly the same daunting magnitude that will run you ragged without a
plan.
As you can imagine, we have a million tips to make your trip to the Big Apple completely unforgettable. Here’s a
couple, to start you off: If you’re heading up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building, go first thing
in the morning, or late in the evening (for that ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ moment). The queues can be inhospitable if
you’re not prepared, so get in and get up outside of peak times.
Whilst in New York, food is an attraction of its own! Be it the humble donut, New York pizza, cupcakes from the
Magnolia Bakery, New York Steak, or Lobster to die for, this is a food capitol that shows that bigger can sometimes
be a lot better!
Remember that in New York the standards of hotel star ratings are usually significantly below Australian
standards – choose very, very wisely.
New York consists of five boroughs and an array of neighbourhoods, each with their own unique and yet distinctly
New York characters. One thing that so many tourists neglect on their NYC adventure is to soak up this ‘friendly
neighbourhood’ flavour by spending time in areas like Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho,
and the like. One of the most incredible services in travel – often emulated, but
rarely mastered – is Big Apple Greeters. For a nominal fee this is a rare and special travel experience as you
spend a half day or so with a local as they show you the delights of their neighbourhood. The connection that
you’ll make with the heart and soul of a small part of this special city is unbeatable in the memory
stakes.
